White Card – Construction Induction

Description

This course incorporates the nationally recognised unit CPCWHS1001 Prepare to work safely in the construction industry from the CPC Construction, Plumbing and Services Training Package.

This unit specifies the mandatory work health and safety training required prior to undertaking construction work. It requires you to demonstrate personal awareness and knowledge of health and safety legislative requirements in order to work safely and prevent injury or harm to yourself and others.

The unit meets the general construction induction training requirements of Part 6.5 of the Model Work Health and Safety Regulations, and the equivalent requirements in Western Australia and Victoria. Site-specific induction training is still expected before you start work on a particular site.

Participants will learn how to:

  • Identify health and safety legislative requirements, duty of care, and the roles, rights and responsibilities of duty holders
  • Identify construction hazards and apply basic principles of risk management
  • Select, use and correctly fit personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Identify health and safety documents such as JSAs, SWMS and safety data sheets
  • Explain the roles of first aid officers, WHS representatives, WHS committee members and supervisors
  • Identify and explain safety signs, symbols and tags
  • Report hazards, incidents and injuries, and respond to incidents and emergencies

Construction hazards covered

Asbestos, confined spaces, electrical hazards, excavations and trenches, dust, falling objects, hazardous substances and dangerous goods, hot and cold environments, manual handling, noise, plant and equipment, traffic and mobile plant, unplanned collapse, UV radiation, and working at heights including scaffolding.

Who is this course for?

Anyone who needs to carry out construction work or access a construction site in Australia, including labourers, tradespeople, apprentices, site supervisors, project staff and students entering the construction industry.

Prerequisites

There are no prerequisites to undertake this course.

Assessment

Assessment includes practical demonstration, oral and written reporting. Your performance is assessed by direct observation by an assessor. You will be required to:

  • Identify and report two construction hazards and explain how the risk could be reduced or removed
  • Select appropriate PPE to control the risk
  • Explain basic procedures for responding to incidents and emergencies, including fire blankets, fire extinguishers and hose reels
  • Identify and explain the meaning of required safety signs and symbols
  • Explain the purpose of JSAs, SWMS and SDS, and the roles of designated health and safety personnel
  • Correctly fit eye protection, hearing protection, a hard hat and a high-visibility vest, shirt or jacket

Certification

Upon successful completion, participants receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for CPCWHS1001. General construction induction cards are issued in line with the requirements of the relevant state or territory work health and safety regulator.

Things to consider

Direct observation

This unit requires your assessment to be directly observed by an assessor, so you must attend the face-to-face class in person and bring photo ID.

System requirements

To undertake the online component of this course you must have access to:

  • A tablet or smartphone (Apple or Android), or a computer with webcam and microphone (laptop or desktop)
  • A reliable internet connection
  • A scanner or smartphone camera to upload documents for assessment
  • A valid email account

Language, Literacy, Numeracy Digital (LLN &D)

You will need to be able to:

  • Follow simple pictorial and written safety instructions in English
  • Recognise numbers commonly used in safety signs
  • Ask questions to clarify instructions and tell another person about a construction hazard
  • Complete a basic form

If you have a disability, special needs, or reading or writing difficulties that may affect your ability to complete this course, please let us know before you book so we can arrange appropriate support. All students complete a short LLN self-assessment before training starts.

Unique Student Identifier (USI)

Participants must hold a USI and provide it when booking. Without a USI we cannot issue a certificate, Statement of Attainment or transcript. Create your USI for free at usi.gov.au.

Proof of identification

We are required by law to verify your identity. Please provide a copy of your government-issued photo ID when you enrol, for example a driver licence, proof-of-age card or passport. Certificates cannot be issued without valid photo ID.

Duration & Structure

The course combines a face-to-face practical class with self-paced online learning.

  • Face-to-face practical class: 8:00am to 2:00pm on your chosen date.
  • Online learning and assessment: self-paced in our learning portal, completed after your class. Portal access is set up as soon as your enrolment is confirmed.

You attend your face-to-face practical class first, then complete the online learning and assessment. Accredited short courses must be completed within three months of enrolment.

Delivery

This course is delivered in a blended mode: a face-to-face practical session followed by self-paced online learning. The online content is broken down into easy, manageable modules designed to support your learning. The practical assessment is conducted by direct observation during the face-to-face class, where you will fit PPE and demonstrate your knowledge of hazards, signs and emergency procedures.
