Description
This course incorporates the nationally recognised unit HLTAID011 Provide First Aid from the HLT Health Training Package.
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to provide a first aid response to a casualty in line with first aid guidelines determined by the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) and other Australian national peak clinical bodies. It applies to all persons who may be required to provide a first aid response in a range of situations, including community and workplace settings.
Participants will learn how to:
- Recognise and assess an emergency situation and ensure safety for yourself, bystanders and the casualty
- Assess the casualty and seek assistance from emergency services
- Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in line with ARC guidelines and use an automated external defibrillator (AED)
- Provide first aid in line with established first aid principles, obtain consent and treat the casualty with respect
- Monitor the casualty’s condition and operate first aid equipment
- Communicate incident details to emergency services and complete incident reports
- Review the incident and recognise the possible psychological impacts on rescuers
Conditions and injuries covered
Signs, symptoms and management of conditions including allergic reaction and anaphylaxis, asthma, bleeding, burns, cardiac conditions and chest pain, choking, diabetes, drowning, envenomation, eye injuries, fractures, dislocations, sprains and strains, head, neck and spinal injuries, hypothermia and hyperthermia, minor wounds, nosebleed, poisoning, seizures, shock, sharps injuries and stroke.
Who is this course for?
Anyone who may be required to provide a first aid response at work or in the community, including workplace first aiders, carers, childcare and aged care workers, teachers, coaches, hospitality staff and parents.
Prerequisites
There are no prerequisites to undertake this course.
Assessment
Practical skills are assessed in realistic, simulated first aid scenarios during your face-to-face class, where you will demonstrate:
- Managing an unconscious, breathing casualty, including positioning to protect the airway
- At least 2 minutes of uninterrupted single-rescuer CPR on an adult manikin placed on the floor, and on an infant manikin
- Following the prompts of an AED training device to deliver a shock
- Managing casualties with anaphylaxis (using an adrenaline auto-injector trainer), asthma, bleeding, choking, envenomation (pressure immobilisation), fractures and sprains, minor wounds, nosebleed and shock
- Responding to a simulated first aid incident and providing verbal and written incident reports
Your knowledge is then assessed online in the learning portal, which you complete after the class.
Certification
Upon successful completion, participants receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for HLTAID011 Provide First Aid.

Things to consider
Physical requirements
The assessment requires you to perform at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on an adult manikin placed on the floor. Please let us know before booking if you have an injury or condition that may affect your ability to kneel or perform CPR.
Refresher training
Requirements for refresher training vary. Check with your employer or the relevant state or territory work health and safety regulator. It is commonly recommended that CPR skills are refreshed every 12 months and first aid every 3 years.
System requirements
To undertake the online component of this course you must have access to:
- A tablet or smartphone (Apple or Android), or a computer with webcam and microphone (laptop or desktop)
- A reliable internet connection
- A scanner or smartphone camera to upload documents for assessment
- A valid email account
Language, Literacy, Numeracy Digital (LLN&D)
You will need to read and follow first aid procedures, communicate clearly with emergency services and complete a written incident report.
If you have a disability, special needs, or reading or writing difficulties that may affect your ability to complete this course, please let us know before you book so we can arrange appropriate support. All students complete a short LLN &D self-assessment before training starts.
Unique Student Identifier (USI)
Participants must hold a USI and provide it when booking. Without a USI we cannot issue a certificate, Statement of Attainment or transcript. Create your USI for free at usi.gov.au.
Proof of identification
We are required by law to verify your identity. Please provide a copy of your government-issued photo ID when you enrol, for example a driver licence, proof-of-age card or passport. Certificates cannot be issued without valid photo ID.
Duration & Structure
The course combines a face-to-face practical class with self-paced online learning.
- Face-to-face practical class: 9:00am to 3:00pm on your chosen date.
- Online learning and assessment: self-paced in our learning portal, completed after your class. Portal access is set up as soon as your enrolment is confirmed.
You attend your face-to-face practical class first, then complete the online learning and assessment. Accredited short courses must be completed within three months of enrolment.
Delivery
This course is delivered in a blended mode: a face-to-face practical session followed by self-paced online learning. The online content is broken down into easy, manageable modules designed to support your learning. Practical skills are assessed during the face-to-face class using adult and infant resuscitation manikins, AED training devices, first aid kits and other realistic equipment.
